The Chovos Halevavos, "Duties of the Heart," written by Rabbeinu Bachya ibn Pakuda, was the earliest work about the service of Hashem written in an organized and systematic fashion. The book is a section of the Chovos Halevavos called the Sha'ar Habitachon, "The Gate of Trust," which describes the benefits of trusting in Hashem and the steps necessary for one to attain that trust.
